Cadillac Mountain – Mount Desert Island Maine
At 1,532 feet, Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard in Maine and is the first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6. Cadillac Mountain is largely composed of pink granite with forests of spruce and pitch pine. Views of Acadia National Park from the top of the mountain are spectacular. And, when combined with tiny subalpine plants (such as cinquefoil), squat, gnarled trees, wild blueberries, and various sized boulders, it is unsurpassed. Bar Harbor, Maine, a well known vacation destination on Mount Desert Island, is to the northeast. The Cranberry Islands are to the southwest. During certain times of the year, visitors to the summit are the first to see the rising sun in the United States.
The winding and scenic road that ascends to the top of Cadillac Mountain is approximately 3.5 miles long and was officially opened in 1931. From the summit on a clear day you can see Frenchman's Bay, Blue Hill Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, with Great Cranberry Island, Little Cranberry Island, Bar Island and the Porcupine Islands - Sheep, Bald, Burnt and Long - Bar Island and Schoodic Peninsula, are all visible in fair weather.
If you are lucky enough to be atop Cadillac Mountain, Maine on a remarkably clear day, you may see Maine's Mount Katahdin, over 100 miles to the west, and Nova Scotia, equally distant to the east. Because of its geographical positioning, it is said that sunrise can be seen from the summit of Cadillac Mountain before daybreak appears anywhere else in the United States. Rise early, and on a clear morning you can expect a treat of a lifetime. Even in partial clouds, and light fog, the view can be extraordinary.
What if you're not a morning riser? You are in luck. A Cadillac Mountain sunset can be quite extraordinary, as well! Cadillac Mountain’s winding 3.5-mile road is closed from December 1 through April 14. Whether you drive to the top or take a challenging hike, Cadillac Mountain will reward you with expansive views of coastal Maine.
