Quaid Takes 5th at J-Daze '98

File photo - R-L Alan Ouellete, Andy Crocker, Mike Quaid, Mike Chase Mike Quaid and his vintage J/24, Ice³, traveled to the Lake Canandaigua J-Daze regatta with an all Vermont crew to take a 5th place out 30 boats. This is the best showing Quaid has had at this venue. The crew consisted of Mike Quaid, Alan Ouellette, Tammy Ouellette, Heather Rowe, and Ken Signorello. The regatta took place on May 2-3 and featured light air sailing with rain threatening throughout. Fortunately it only rained over night. The race committee handled the shifting conditions smoothly with no unnecessary delays. Racing conditions were difficult with many places lost and gained on each leg. "Playing the shifts, excellent boat speed, sailing smart and excellent team work were key" according to Tammy Ouellette. The race also featured a four place scoring penalty.

Also traveling from Burlington was Suzanne Hebeler with a boat from southern Vermont. Allan Keyes brought his boat, Rigel, from Rutland. Suzanne got the call to do foredeck for the regatta, her first time ever at this position in a race. "I'm glad it was a light-air regatta. It was a great way to get introduced to the pointy end of the boat." she said. With Ray Harrington at the helm for the first race, the boat posted a second place finish in its first race of the season. Unfortunately, crew work was not consistent throughout the regatta, and the boat accepted a penalty in the third race for fouling another boat, and hit the start mark in the fifth race and had to re-round. The boat also had a top-ten finish with Allan at the helm, placing ninth in race 4 finishing with a overall place of 12th.
