Not So Great

As reported in the Burlington Free Press 2/26/98

The Michigan congressional delegation headed by Fred Upton, R-Michigan introduced legislation Wed, Feb. 25, 1998 to reverse the 'Great Lake' designation for Lake Champlain.

"It's worth noting that Vermont is a landlocked state," Upon said, "Its borders are neither ringed by beaches or lakes, but by maple trees and hills."

It's not like we're getting Rand McNally to go out and change their map," Leahy spokesman David Carle said.

Last year the federal government provided $56 million in funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to colleges and Universities for research. The Great Lakes and Lake Champlain have similar problems including the zebra mussel and sea lamprey issues.

Signing on to Upton's bill were Michigan Reps. Dale Kildee, Democrat and Republicans Vernon Ehelers, Pete Hoekstra, Dave Camp and Nick Smith.

And even more... It's official...
