In 1968, LCYC in conjunction with the Lake Champlain Racing Conference organized The Commodore MacDonough Race to commemorate the victory of the American fleet commanded by Commodore Thomas MacDonough over a British fleet on September 11, 1814, at Plattsburg Bay. The original course, which is 73.6 nm in length and still is used by the Classes A and B, consists of only two marks, the RNB at Point au Roche to the north and Diamond Island to the south In the late 197 Os, a shorter course which rounded Valcour Island to the north was added to encourage participation by Classes C and D as well as the Non-spinnaker Class. This year's race will he the 32nd consecutive running.

Racing Area: The race area will include Lake Champlain, Shelburne Bay and be bounded by La Roche Reef to the north and Diamond Island to the south.

Courses:
Classes A,B - 73.6 NM

• Start at the Lake Champlain Yacht Club between the Committee boat and the adjacent mark;
• Leave RN"2 off Shelburne Point to port;
• Leave RGN "LR.. off La Roche Reef to port;
• Leave Diamond Island to port;
• Leave RN"2.. off Shelburne point to starboard;
• Finish at the Lake Champlain Yacht Club between the Committee boat and the designated mark.

Classes C,D,J&M - 48.2 NM

• Start at the Lake Champlain Yacht Club between the Committee boat and the adjacent mark;
• Leave RN "2" off Shelburne Point to port;
• Leave Valcour Island to port;
• Leave Diamond Island to port;
• Leave RN "2" off Shelburne point to starboard;
• Finish at the Lake Champlain Yacht Club between the Committee boat and the designated mark.

Shortened Course: Courses may be shortened at any mark. In the event that the race is shortened at Diamond Island, Diamond Island shall be rounded to port and the finish line shall be between the Race Committee Boat and Diamond Island Light.

The Red Starting Shape for the class just starting will be the Preparatory Shape for the class preparing to start. Class flags will be flown in accordance with the 1999 LCYC General Sailing Instructions

Time Limit: A boat must finish prior to 1300 hours plus her time allowance against the highest rated yacht in her class on 12 September 1999 to be scored.

Scoring: The race will be scored time-on-distance.

Awards: Awards will be given by the Lake Champlain Yacht Club and the Lake Champlain Racing Conference for 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each class for members of each respective organization.

Protests: Protests will be heard in accordance with Article 18 of the General Sailing Instruction except that the Protest Hearing will take place on Monday, 13 September 1999, at 1900 hours, at the LCYC Clubhouse.

Other:

  • Skipper's Meeting, Saturday at 0915,11 September 1999, at the LCYC Clubhouse.
  • The Race Committee will be on station at 1000.
  • The 1999 Lake Champlain Yacht Club General Sailing Instruction along with the Commodore MacDonough Special Sailing Instruction will be available at the LCYC Clubhouse on the day of the race or from the Race Committee Boat prior to the first warning signal.
  • All boats should notify the Race Committee on VHF 12 upon entering Shelburne Bay to finish; an acknowledgement may not be given.
  • All boats should notify the Race Committee on VHF 12 upon nearing the finish area. The Race Committee will then shine spotlight between the Race Committee flag and the Finish mark until the boat crosses the finish line. Upon breaking the finish line, the spotlight will be extinguished immediately to avoid blinding the crew. After finishing, the Race Committee may illuminate the boat's sail number to confirm its identification.
  • After-dark finishes will be signaled by horn or whistle; first-to-finish in each class will receive two horns or whistles close together.
  • The LCYC jib & main adjustment factor will not apply in this race
  • A boat finishing after the Race Committee Boat has left its station shall record her finishing in accordance with Article 15.0 Finish Line of the 1999 LCYC General Sailing Instructions.
