Lake Champlain Basin
Technical Assistance Program Awards

nn Cousins, Cultural Heritage Coordinator for the Lake Champlain Basin Program, announced that eight historic preservation projects will receive financial assistance through the Cultural Resource Working Group's Technical Assistance Program. Under the Technical Assistance Program, support is awarded to eligible municipalities, non-profit organizations and individuals in the Lake Champlain Basin. Amounts up to $500 are granted on a competitive basis to support a broad spectrum of local preservation initiatives including archeology, engineering assessments, building assessments, historic site interpretation, museum mentoring, scholarships for workshops and continuing education, and outreach projects.

According to Mary Hotaling, member of the Cultural Resources Working Group, "The Technical Assistance Program was designed to provide funding where other grant sources are not available. We looked at both sides of the lake, and then put together a program that would fill in the gaps. The Technical Assistance Program provides badly needed funds and technical expertise to support local preservation initiatives.'

Recipients for this round of technical assistance support are:

  • The Penfield Foundation: $500 for a building conditions assessment of the Penfield Museum and church;
  • Clinton Community College: $375 for scholarships for the 1996 summer workshop, "The Revolutionary War on Southern Lake Champlain";
  • Vermont Archeological Society: $300 for publishing a calendar of Vermont Archeology Week activities;
  • Essex Maritime Festival: $450 to sponsor the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Launch, and Historical Society exhibits;
  • Moriah Historical Society: $500 for an initial archeological assessment;
  • Town of Moriah: $500 for a building conditions assessment of the Town Office Building;
  • Arts Council of Northern Adirondacks: $500 for a public address system evaluation for the historic Harrietstown Town Hall Auditorium;
  • Adirondack Women in History, Inc.. $175 to hire a consultant to assist with addressing museum start-up concerns and exhibit design.
