Lightnings Race on Malletts Bay

MBBC hosts one-design series

ive races were held on the inner Malletts Bay on Monday May 28. Ken Signorello served as race committee for six Lightnings competing under sunny skies and moderate breeze. JoAnn Jones and Brian Hughes, sailing with Bill Fastiggi, won three of the five races, while the crew of Sean Carroll and Don & Ann Brush completed the day with five second place finishes. Kurt Kling, sailing "apple", was third with two bullets.

MBBC hosts a one-design series throughout the summer. Any fleet with three or more boats can request a start. The J-24 fleet was not present, partially due to the high water level. The hoist at MBBC is still under 18" of water, making launching difficult.

The Lightning fleet will host their annual Spring Regatta on June 1 & 2. Approximately 20 crews will travel to Malletts Bay from as far away as Cape Cod. The regatta draws many topflight boats from New England and Quebec and should be an excellent event.

1996 Malletts Bay Boat Club Coffee Pot Race

The Harbormaster

ull Tilt 2, skippered by Richard Spurlock, outdistanced the fleet during the Malletts Bay Boat Club’s Coffee Pot Race held on Sunday May 26. "Bark Ode", helmed by Harold Browne, finished second, followed by Ken Signorello (Harbor watch Publisher) in third.

The Coffee Pot is the MBBC season’s opening race. This year’s disappointing turnout was due to the late spring and high water levels. Bill Fastiggi and JoAnn Jones served as race committee. They postponed the race for several hours until the wind filled in from the northwest.

The shifty conditions in the inner Malletts Bay favored the crews who could change gears the smoothest. Half mile legs put a premium on sail handling and less on boat speed. This was most evident when Ken Signorello, aboard J-24 "Results", was first to the windward mark in each of two races, despite the fact that "Bark Ode" and "Full Tilt 2" owe over one minute per mile to "Results". Ken and his crew had excellent starts and great first legs.

"Results"

Al Johnson sailed his 20+ year old Pearson 26 "Swan Song" to a first place finish in the second race. Unfortunately, Al did not have any competition in his class but made up for it by sailing a great race. It’s fantastic to see a venerable boat like the Pearson 26 competing against modern sport boats like "Full Tilt 2"..... and win!

" "Swan Song"

Dave Ellis bested the cruising class with two bullets. His Columbia Sabre is a 30+ year old design modeled from a 5.5 meter design. Dave showed the fleet that even without a spinnaker, "Espada" can be competitive. In the light conditions in the first race, "Espada" corrected ahead of two boats in the racing division!

" It is rumored that "Bark Ode" started the race with twelve crew members. Some competitors complained claiming "Bark Ode" was "loading up with crew" to enhance her performance by increasing the displacement and waterline. Others observed what appeared to be several "chinese fire drills" each time they tacked. Regardless of these factors, her second place finish overall was, if not impressive, certainly entertaining.
